75th Anniversary Staff Spotlight

Past Staff Profile: Cory Merritt

Scouting Background: Troop 72 in Orwell, OH

Beaumont Scout Reservation Camp Staff: 2007-2008, First Year Camper Instructor, then Area Director

Camp Stigwandish Camp Staff: 2005-2006, Counselor-in-Training for blacksmithing and ecology

Favorite Campsite: Thornapple in Camp McCahill, because it’s quiet and was easy to clean up and tear down than other sites at the end of the Summer.

Quote: “Camp staff creates friendships and connections that last a lifetime.”

Cory currently works for Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI) as a Sales Manager, and Scouting translated very well into his career goals and past experience working for the Georgia State Park system. You might see him while picking up some camping gear at the REI in Beachwood!

Cory’s favorite Beaumont Staff memories come from working with first-year Scouts, which grew teaching into a passion for him. The many instances of giving confidence to scouts who were struggling to learn skills like knot-tying were always magical moments for Cory. Another favorite was getting to know fellow camp staff members and playing ‘roofball’ at Beaumart. In many aspects of his life, Cory has found that camp staff has created lifelong bonds, forged new skills that translate to success in college and careers and instilling a fun spirit and love of teaching others.
